PN’s Fazrul Kamal says he is the first ‘local boy’ to contest the Simpang Renggam parliamentary seat.SIMPANG RENGGAM: With two heavyweights in a former Johor menteri besar and a former education minister clashing in Simpang Renggam, Perikatan Nasional’s Fazrul Kamal knows he is the underdog.
But Fazrul is hoping to live out the story of David versus Goliath, except he will have to slay two of such giants.
The 36-year-old believes that being born and bred in Simpang Renggam gives him an edge over Barisan Nasional’s Hasni Mohammad and Pakatan Harapan’s Maszlee Malik.
“We’ve never had a local become a candidate in Simpang Renggam. I am the first,” he told FMT. “And I want to be a giant-killer.”

After 10 days of campaigning, Fazrul is confident of springing an upset in the polls. He said most Simpang Renggam voters wanted someone who actually came from the sleepy town to represent them in Parliament.
He also drew confidence from reports that a survey found 35% of Malay voters were more inclined towards the Muhyiddin Yassin-led PN.
He wanted to emphasise education and upskilling youths in Simpang Renggam so that they can elevate their standard of living, noting that lack of job opportunities was an issue there.
In the 2018 general election, former education minister Maszlee won the seat by more than 3,000 votes, defeating candidates from BN and PAS. He is in a four-way fight to defend his seat, contesting with Hasni, Fazrul and Pejuang’s Kamal Kusmin. - FMT
