(Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari says the party is ready to assist its unity government partner Barisan Nasional in the Kemaman by-election on Dec 2.
He said PKR would be helping the BN candidate and machinery, especially in Cukai, one of the four state assemblies under the parliamentary constituency.
“PKR has a large base (in Kemaman) because we once served as a representative in that area (following the 10th general election).
“So, God willing, we will try to help bring victory to the coalition government,” Amirudin said after attending a Deepavali open house here.
PKR’s Abdul Rahman Yusof won the Kemaman seat in GE10 in 1999 after defeating BN’s Wan Zaki Wan Muda with a 1,535-vote majority.
Yesterday, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi hinted the party may place a direct candidate in the Kemaman by-election.
The Umno president said the same method was used by BN in previous elections and was well received. Under this system, candidates are chosen without regard to the hierarchy within the party.
“We will likely use the same method in Kemaman (the parliamentary by-election),” Zahid said.
BN is expected to announce its candidate for the by-election tomorrow.
The Kemaman parliamentary by-election is being held following a Terengganu election court’s ruling on Sept 26 which nullified the victory of Perikatan Nasional’s Che Alias Hamid in GE15.
The court annulled the win after finding that the payment of i-Belia and i-Siswa aid to voters during the campaign period constituted bribery. - FMT
