Peter Anthony S Appeal Hearing Adjourned To Aug 1
The prosecution wishes to respond to an “issue” raised in former Sabah minister Peter Anthony's appeal to quash his three-year jail sentence over a 2014 letter forgery case.
As a result, the three-person Court of Appeal bench today adjourned to Aug 1 the hearing of the former Sabah infrastructure and development minister's appeal linked to a system maintenance contract.
Before panel chairperson Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said the prosecution seeks time to look into the “issue”.
"We are prepared to submit today, but we seek an adjournment to look into the issue that arose in my learned friend's submission," said Wan Shaharuddin, referring to Peter’s lawyers’ submission.
However, the prosecution did not indicate what the “issue” was about.
Peter's lead counsel Nicholas Kow indicated that the appellant wants the appeal to be dispensed with as soon as possible.
"My client wishes to clear his name in court. The Sabah state election is coming up," the lawyer told the appellate panel.
On behalf of bench members Mohamed Zaini Mazlan and Azmi Ariffin, Zaidi then allowed the postponement of the hearing to Aug 1.
Peter’s case
Peter, 53, is out on bail pending disposal of his appeal linked to a letter from Universiti Malaysia Sabah deputy vice-chancellor's office.
Prosecutors accused the former managing director of Syarikat Asli Jati of forging the document by inserting a false statement for fraudulent purposes.
Peter was accused of committing fraud at the office of the principal private secretary to the prime minister at the Perdana Putra building in Putrajaya between June 13 and Aug 21, 2014.
He was found guilty and sentenced to jail time as well as an RM50,000 fine by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court in 2022.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court upheld his conviction and sentencing last year.
