Perak Launches Programme To Help Needy Students Facing Public Exams
IPOH: The Perak government has launched the Cikgu Saarani Tuition Programme to help needy and underprivileged students who will be sitting for public examinations.
Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Saarani Mohamad (pic) said the first phase of the programme would see some RM2.7mil allocated to prepare meals for 35,639 SPM candidates who are attending schools and extra classes to prepare for the examinations.
"The students involved will be given lunches daily for 15 days until the examinations on Feb 22.
"The meals will be prepared by the respective school canteen operators," he told a press conference held virtually on Wednesday (Feb 3).
"The state Education Department has also assigned teachers to give tuition and additional classes for critical subjects such as Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics and History.
"The programme began on Monday (Feb 1)," he said, adding that the meals will also be prepared for the teachers.
Saarani said the programme was initiated to lessen the burden on the needy students' parents.
"We want to eradicate poverty and education is one way to do it.
"We also want to help the canteen operators, whose businesses have been affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
"The allocation for the meals will be given to the respective school Parent-Teacher Associations and they will pay the operators," he added.
Saarani said the programme will also benefit the 37,894 students who will be sitting for their public examinations this year.
"Others who will also benefit include 30,320 Form Four students, 31,761 Form One students and 31,742 Year One pupils," he said.
"The programme will be extended further to include other initiatives and special assistance like seminars to answer examination questions, intensive programmes and preparation of interactive learning materials," he added. - Star
