Nrd S Mykad Probe Finds Cancer Patient Not Malaysian Citizen Minister
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the National Registration Department (NRD) has found out that the 65-year-old woman in Sarawak who had her MyKad confiscated is an Indonesian citizen.
He said this discovery was made after an investigation on the matter was launched.
"The MyKad was indeed withdrawn.
"This is after the birth certificates of the woman’s children showed that her nationality is Indonesian.
"The investigation by the NRD also confirmed that," Saifuddin (above) explained after attending a town hall organised by Sinar Harian today.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported about an elderly woman named Lina Samuel from Lawas, Sarawak whose MyKad was confiscated by the NRD.
Lina is from the Lun Bawang group.
She explained that the incident happened after she visited the district NRD office to change the address on her card so she could vote in the 15th general election.
She suffers from colon cancer and without her MyKad, she has been unable to receive treatment for her ailment.
Malaysiakini has contacted the Indonesian Embassy to get further clarification on the true citizenship status of the woman.
Meanwhile, Saifuddin explained that the NRD does not arbitrarily withdraw identification documents.
"NRD doesn’t simply withdraw birth certificates, there must be a reason. We have to investigate with an investigation panel. I want to say, it is not an easy job for the NRD.
"That's why I say verifying the authenticity and validity of a document is important," he said.
It was also brought to this news portal’s attention that Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof has reached out to Lina’s daughter in order to obtain more information about the case. - Mkini
