PETALING JAYA: Norza Zakaria will retain his position as Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president for the 2025-2029 term after being the only person nominated to contest for the post.
Norza, the former Badminton Association of Malaysia president, was nominated by 14 ordinary members of the OCM, the council said in a statement today.
Malaysia Karate Federation president Nur Azmi Ahmad and Malaysia Lawn Bowls Federation president Awalan Abdul Aziz are vying to be Norza’s deputy.
Seven candidates are in contention for the five OCM vice-president’s posts up for grabs, including incumbents Mumtaz Jaafar and Chong Kim Fatt.
The other candidates are former national swimmer Nurul Huda Abdullah, Malaysian Boxing Federation president Iruan Zulkefli, Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia president Sumali Reduan, Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia president Monteiro Gerard Clair and Taekwondo Malaysia president Azizul Annuar Adenan.
Nasir Ali, the current assistant treasurer, will take over as secretary-general after being the only candidate nominated. Ahmad Feisal Ahmad Tajuddin will also retain the treasurer’s post uncontested.
OCM will hold the elections for the 2025-2029 term at its 44th annual general assembly on April 19.
An independent panel comprising Court of Appeal judge Firuz Jaffril, High Court judge Anand Ponnudurai and Harjit Singh Sidhu has been appointed to oversee the polling process.
Firuz said all candidates contesting in the election have been screened by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the police and the insolvency department.
“No records of corruption, criminal offences or bankruptcy were found for any of the candidates. All of them are therefore eligible to stand for election as valid candidates,” he said. - FMT
