No Proof Face Shields Work But Better Than Nothing Dg
COVID-19 | Unlike face masks, there has yet to be clinical proof that face shields are effective against the spread of Covid-19, said Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah today
However, he opined that using a face shield was better than not having any face covering at all
“We are looking into the use of face shields, whether face shields can be used. We don’t have any clinical proof yet that they can prevent the virus, but (it’s good) to at least use a face shield
“For face masks, we have proof that says they can break the chain of infection by around 60 to 65 percent. When you add in physical distancing, (the protection) will increase even further,” he explained when asked about the efficacy of face shields during a media briefing today
“It is better to wear a face shield than nothing at all. We encourage the use of face masks or face shields,” the top official added
Earlier today, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the health ministry had been instructed to study the feasibility of using alternatives to disposable face masks at schools
Alternatives included cloth-based face masks and face shields
According to a study published in medical journal The Lancet, “eye protection” or face shields cut down the chance of Covid-19 infection or transmission from 16 percent to 5.5 percent
Face masks, meanwhile, cut down the chance of infection or transmission from 17.4 percent to 3.1 percent
The study also found that maintaining a one metre or more distance from others cuts down the chance of infection or transmission from 12.8 percent to 2.6 percent. - Mkini
