Nik Aziz S Wisdom Recalled Politicians Lose Not Make Money
After serving as a senior lecturer with Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) for more than a decade, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man was confronted with the choice of becoming a full-time politician.
He sought the advice of his uncle, who was none other than the late PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat (above).
Tuan Ibrahim, who is now PAS deputy president, recalled their conversation - which took place ahead of the 1999 general election - at a ceramah in Shah Alam last night.
“I met the late Tok Guru Nik Aziz to ask for his advice. I said ‘Tok Guru, please advise me, the party has ordered me to contest’. He gave me two pieces of advice.
“The first - don’t enter politics with the intention of being rich. If you want to be rich, (do) business. Politics (is for the) struggle. You will run out of money, time and energy,” he was quoted as saying by Harakah Daily.
Tuan Ibrahim said Nik Aziz, who passed away in 2015, told him to be prepared to face “slander, insults, criticism and attacks” in the realm of politics.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man“The second (advice) is, ‘Let there be money in your pocket, so that you can help people in need wherever you go’.
“These are the messages from the late Tok Guru. That is why for us (PAS), politics is not a place to seek personal riches.
“This is not the place to make a profit. Politics is a struggle. A struggle to be with the people who are struggling,” he added.
Tuan Ibrahim emerged victorious in his political debut, winning the state seat of Jengka in Pahang.
The 62-year-old former minister is currently the incumbent lawmaker for Kubang Kerian, a federal constituency in Kelantan.
PAS and its allies in Perikatan Nasional are hoping to stage an upset in Selangor, which has been under Pakatan Harapan’s control since the 2008 general election.
Selangor and five other states - Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Penang, Terengganu and Kelantan - will be holding their respective state elections soon. - Mkini
