Immunisation minister Khairy Jamaluddin said illegal immigrants and refugees will be more comfortable if the vaccination centre is manned by an NGO.PUTRAJAYA: Non-governmental organisations such as the Red Crescent will be roped in for the vaccination exercise for refugees and illegal immigrants, according to immunisation coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
“Illegal immigrants and refugees would be more comfortable if the vaccination centre is handled by an NGO which has provided them health services,” he said in an interview with the media. “In this way, they will not be afraid to go for vaccination,” he said.
“Do not be afraid to go for vaccination; this is important because they are at risk and also put others at risk. No one is safe until everyone is safe,” he added.
Khairy also said that the guidelines for illegal immigrants and refugees to be vaccinated had been approved.
He said the details on the guidelines, which were approved by the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force, would be announced later.
He hoped the guidelines would encourage illegal immigrants and refugees to come forward for their vaccine shots and they would also inform their countrymen to come forward as well.
On complaints by many who have yet to receive their vaccination appointment despite registering for a long time, Khairy said the appointment was given according to locations and phases of priority determined by the national immunisation programme.
“As an example, Rembau district has completed Phase 2, so appointments for Phase 3 would be given out and it is based on the stipulated sequence.
“There are some hospitals which have a waiting list that is for those who frequent the clinic or hospital for treatment. Priority would be given to them,” he said. - FMT
