Ngo Muda Claims Syed Saddiq Plagiarised Its Identity
A Johor-based NGO known as "Muda!" has claimed that Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman had plagiarised its identity for his new youth-led political party of the same name.
Muda!'s founder Onn Mahathir told Malaysiakini that Muda! had been around since 2018 and was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies.
For the record, Syed Saddiq submitted his application for Muda, short for "Malaysian United Democratic Alliance", yesterday.
Onn said he didn't mind Syed Saddiq forming a new youth party but urged the latter to change his party's identity so as to not confuse the public.
"We don't oppose his idea of forming a new party, that's up to him. It's just that we think he has run out of ideas as both identities are similar.
"He should come out with a fresh idea. When he was with Bersatu, he did not even use 'youth wing' but rather 'Armada'.
"If he really celebrates the youth's voice, please change the party's identity," Onn said.
Onn explained that he first noticed the similarity when he saw a picture of Syed Saddiq in Sabah donning a T-shirt emblazoned with the word "Muda".
He said the NGO had tagged Syed Saddiq across social media platforms to get his response but to no avail.
"He did not respond to our concerns on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
"We started the Muda! movement and have been involved in numerous activities, so it's impossible that Syed Saddiq and his circle are unaware of our existence," Onn added.
Syed Saddiq, in a brief response to the NGO's criticisms via Twitter, said that his new party's name did not breach any intellectual property (IP).
"It's okay to share the name 'Muda'. The more the youth spirit, the better.
"Parti Muda has done due diligence. God willing, it did not breach any IP," he tweeted.
Syed Saddiq's new party is touted as being youth-led, multi-racial and multi-religious. It has 13 sponsors.
Its members include medical doctors Dr Thanussha Francis Xavier and Dr Mathen Nair; Liga Rakyat Demokratik activist Amir Abdul Hadi; tech-entrepreneur Radzi Tajuddin; student and environmental activist Afiqah Zulkifli; agro-entrepreneur Shahrizal Denci and academic Teo Lee Ken. - Mkini
