Former prime minister Najib Razak.KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Najib Razak voiced confidence today that his one-time deputy Muhyiddin Yassin could command a majority in the Dewan Rakyat to survive the vote of confidence
“We believe we have the numbers, but I think the focus now is to make sure the economy is in good shape and to restore confidence,” he said while leaving his court hearing here
He added that Muhyiddin should be given the chance to deliver on his duty as prime minister
“All of us should give him a chance to execute and deliver
“I know the responsibilities are enormous and the challenges are onerous,” he said when asked about Muhyiddin’s maiden speech yesterday
Muhyiddin had asked the public to give him their full support in carrying out the “heavy responsibility”. He also said his government would continue to fight corruption and abuse of power, and promised to improve the national healthcare system
Muhyiddin took office on Sunday after what has been described as the longest week in Malaysian politics. He was named the next prime minister after Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah interviewed all 222 MPs and consulted party leaders
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Pakatan Harapan, which is now in the opposition, would ask for an urgent sitting of the Dewan Rakyat to determine who has the majority

Mahathir disputed that Muhyiddin has the full support of all PPBM MPs, as six representatives, including himself and his son Mukhriz Mahathir, do not back him. - FMT
