Muda Irresponsible For Zahid To Say Najib Was Selectively Prosecuted
Muda today criticised Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for saying that Najib Abdul Razak was a victim of "selective and political prosecution" in his speech at the recent 2022 Umno general assembly.
In a statement, Muda secretary-general Amir Abd Hadi said it was irresponsible for Zahid to make such a statement as he is the deputy prime minister, which effectively makes Zahid the country's second top leader.
"His statement created the impression as if the decision by the Federal Court to maintain Najib's 12-year jail sentence and RM210 million fine in regard to the SRC International case was unfair.
"It also can erode the rakyat's trust in the country's judiciary. This creates a bad perception of the government.
"As a party that supports the government, we will try to ensure there will be no political influence on any court cases, and should there be any clear element of interference (in the justice process), we will make sure to bring it to the public's attention," he said.
Muda secretary-general Amir Abd HadiZahid in his policy speech at the assembly on Friday called on the judiciary to give Najib "fair justice" in his criminal trials.
Najib, a former prime minister, is currently undergoing his jail sentence at the Kajang Prison in Selangor.
He was sent to prison last Aug 23 after the Federal Court upheld his guilty verdict over seven charges related to the SRC International scandal.
The former Pekan MP was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment and slapped with a RM210 million fine. - Mkini
