Vigneswaran says he is optimistic that good relations between the Malaysian Tamils and their counterparts in Tamil Nadu will continue.KUALA LUMPUR: The department of overseas Tamils proposed by the incoming government of Tamil Nadu in India, to look after the welfare of the Tamil diaspora has been welcomed by the leaders of the Tamil community in Malaysia.
With Tamils being the biggest group of Indians in Malaysia, they believe the department promised by the DMK party that won the recent elections in the state would contribute towards bilateral relations between Malaysia and the state of Tamil Nadu.
MIC president SA Vigneswaran said he was optimistic that the good relations and exchanges between the Malaysian Tamils and their counterparts in Tamil Nadu would continue to receive special attention under DMK’s rule.
“I welcome this special promise of theirs and am ready to extend all possible advice and cooperation to the government of Tamil Nadu in fulfilling and implementing that promise,” he said in a statement today.
Vigneswaran also congratulated party leader MK Stalin for the victory in the elections held on April 6. The results were announced yesterday.
After a decade in the opposition, the DMK won a convincing victory over arch-rival All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the 68-year-old Stalin is set to be sworn in as the chief minister for the first time on May 7.
The DMK has won 126 seats in the 243-seat state assembly to cross the simple majority mark of 118. It is also leading in seven other seats while ally, the Congress of India has bagged 18 seats. AIADMK only won in 64 constituencies and is leading in two. - FMT
