Mcmc Lodges Police Report Against 3 Social Media Figures
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has lodged a police report against Badrul Hisham Shaharin (Chegubard), Mohamad Salim Iskandar, and Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris (Papagomo).
In a statement today, it accused the trio of making and circulating false claims against MCMC officers.
“The content in question portrays MCMC officers as though they acted under instructions that have political interests, in addition to being an abuse of power.
“At the same time, some of the three individuals slandered MCMC by stating that the officers involved in recording (their) statements were fed up with the current government, and asked when there will be a change of government,” it said.
The police report was lodged yesterday.
The case purportedly stems from content that the three uploaded across TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube on Wednesday (April 17).
The MCMC denied their allegations and asserted that it carries out its duties per the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and related laws.
“Therefore, MCMC vehemently denies the allegations made by these individuals and has referred the matter to the Royal Malaysia Police for investigation,” it added.
Disseminating false content with intent to harass is a violation under Section 233 of the act, punishable by a fine of up to RM50,000, a maximum one-year jail term, or both.
The MCMC cautioned the public against misusing network services and online applications to spread misinformation.
On Thursday, it was reported that the MCMC recorded the trio’s statements to facilitate investigations into an alleged offence under Section 233 of the MCMC Act.
Badrul Hisham and Mohamad Salim’s statements were recorded at the MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya, while Wan Muhammad Azri’s (above) statement was recorded at the Setapak police station in Kuala Lumpur.
The MCMC also seized their mobile phones, which were believed to have been used to upload offensive content onto social media platforms. - Mkini
