Maszlee Prepared To Join Johor Battle If Asked To
Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik, who joined PKR in November, has said he is prepared to contest in the upcoming Johor state election if asked to by party leaders.
He clarified, however, that he has received no such orders as of now.
“For me, the most important thing is for Pakatan Harapan to win in Johor, starting with Simpang Renggam.
“If it requires me to contest, and if asked by my party, I will abide,” he said during a presser today outside the Dang Wangi district police station in Kuala Lumpur.
Maszlee (above) added that he launched the party's election machinery yesterday for two state constituencies in his Simpang Renggam parliamentary constituency – Layang-Layang and Machap.
He said he is determined for Harapan to win the Johor state elections, starting with the seats in Simpang Renggam.
Malaysiakini previously reported that PKR was mulling to field Maszlee in the state seat of Layang-Layang and his name is also being floated as a potential menteri besar candidate.
However, he downplayed speculation that he would be PKR and Harapan's candidate for Johor menteri besar.
Maszlee, who was the education minister during Harapan's federal administration, was sacked from Bersatu in 2020 after objecting to Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin's decision to take the party out of the Harapan coalition.
He then joined Pejuang for several months before resigning to become an independent MP.
He proceeded to join PKR on Nov 27.
When asked whether he will convince Pejuang to compete under the Harapan banner during the Johor election, he declined to answer.
“I don’t think I am in a position to answer that.
“The best to answer that is those representing Harapan and the (Harapan) presidential council,” he said.
