Poh Lee Aik, 45, pleaded not guilty to assaulting his mother with a cane before judge Khalid Ab Karim in the sessions court.
He was charged with deliberately harming his mother, 69, by caning her repeatedly on her head and body at a house in Taman Lembah Hijau, George Town, at 7pm on Feb 13, under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A.
Deputy public prosecutor Puteri Nor Nadia Iqbal said Poh should be denied bail because of the seriousness of the offence and as he lived with his mother.
Poh, who was unrepresented, sought bail, stating that he needed to seek treatment for high blood pressure and had to support two children still in school, in the custody of his former wife.
Khalid denied Poh bail and set March 19 for re-mention of the case.
Poh was also charged in the magistrates’ court with threatening to kill or deliberately injuring his mother by caning her repeatedly at the same time, date and place under Section 506 and Section 323 of the Penal Code.
Magistrate Siti Nurul Suhaila Baharin set March 19 for mention.
He was also charged in another magistrates’ court under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 with administering methamphetamine on himself at 6am on Feb 14, at the narcotics CID office in the Timur Laut police headquarters.
Magistrate Nadratun Naim Saidi set April 24 for submission of the pathology report. - FMT
