Malaysian Bar Should Not Let Anyone Steal Its Thunder
YOURSAY | Nurul Izzah can join march, but no comments, please.
Nurul Izzah: I joined lawyers' march as concerned citizen
Nurul Izzah marches with lawyers, moots tribunal to probe JAC leak claims
For a Better World: The march for judicial independence yesterday was organised solely by members of the Malaysian Bar, and consequently, only lawyers with a practising certificate should have been allowed to participate.
I agreed that former members, eminent retired lawyers, or politician lawyers could join.
But I would state that non-members who are well-known in the country or top politicians should not have been given special permission to walk.
A few participants have managed to hog the limelight and credit for the event.
GanMu: Nurul Izzah Anwar is trying to steal the thunder out of the Malaysian Bar and be the champion for judicial independence. What locus standi does she have to barge into this march and make statements as though she is the leader?
She can join the march just like Bersih and others, but no comments please. She could have started her own movement. What an embarrassment.
Her suggestion that the probe can be initiated by setting up an independent tribunal made up of five senior judges is just to scuttle Rafizi Ramli's call for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) and show that she is better than him.
I do not recall Marina Mahathir (former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's daughter) doing such "shows" when her father was the prime minister.
Rather than making suggestions for brownie points, Nurul Izzah should have a pep talk with her father, and he should resign rather than making matters worse.
Falcon: Is this stranger than fiction? Or an orchestrated participation?
More importantly, with Nurul Izzah at the Malaysian Bar march for judicial independence, I wonder what will now happen to the PKR strike force of brown nosers calling for the suspension of Rafizi and team?
Run, hide, blame the media for wrongly quoting them?
Mazhilamani: Nurul Izzah joining the march is a class but unexpected act. She should be well praised for this.
This act alone is sufficient acknowledgement that tainted judges should not occupy top positions in the judiciary.
It could also mean that Anwar Ibrahim may have approved her attendance at the Malaysian Bar march for an independent judiciary, or that Nurul Izzah is fully in support of reformation.
Thanks to Rafizi, the former PKR deputy president, for highlighting and fighting for judges with the right character and integrity to hold top judiciary positions before they are swamped and influenced by corrupt and elite politicians with ongoing cases.
GP2025: As for her suggestion of an independent tribunal, who will select the judges? How independent will that be?
Who will appear before the tribunal? The compromised judge or the compromised prime minister?
I can predict the outcome. The prime minister will get off scot-free while the poor judge who naively went along with the plan will be offered as the sacrificial lamb.
Do you want to be part of this charade? The solution is for the prime minister to resign or to have a confidence vote in Parliament.
Cogito Ergo Sum: But, is a tribunal necessary immediately? It’s for the prime minister to step aside until he has disposed of all his court cases which is required by common sense.
By marching, Nurul Izzah has shown herself to be a pretender and hypocrite. She can easily sort this at home with her father, advising him to be pragmatic.
Constitutional supremacy: Malaysians should not fall for a tribunal. Those judges who are fair will not be nominated. Tribunal can never bring out the truth, only cover up.
That is why Rafizi called for an RCI with much wider powers. The rakyat should push for an RCI and reject the tribunal.
Meerkat: I'm reserving my judgment. On one hand, we may be cynical to dismiss it. If Nurul Izzah wishes to do something, this is a good start, though we would have liked to see something done with regards to MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki, as she promised.
We can give her the benefit of the doubt that she has done it, but Anwar may have stubbornly stood his ground. On the other hand, the absence of anything on Azam could be a broken promise by her.
Anyway, there is enough time to judge her before the next election. But one thing is clear, her father has to go, the sooner the better. - Mkini
