(Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: A health advocacy group says Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 cases per capita has surpassed that of India and the death toll has surpassed the rate in Indonesia and the Philippines.
The CodeBlue group, quoting figures from the Our World in Data website, said Malaysia reported 185.3 new Covid-19 cases per million people on May 23, based on a rolling seven-day average, exceeding India’s figure of 184.99 and the US figure of 76.31.
“That means yesterday Malaysia reported 185.3 new Covid-19 cases for every million residents, based on the average over the past seven days,” it said.
India’s case trajectory on a per capita basis had been trending downwards since May 8, while Malaysia’s infections had been on the rise.
India emerged as the centre of the global Covid-19 surge on April 5 with more than 100,000 new daily Covid-19 cases, recording 26 million Covid-19 infections and over 300,000 deaths as of yesterday.
CodeBlue said Malaysia surpassed the Philippines and Indonesia yesterday in terms of daily new confirmed coronavirus cases without being tied to population size.
There were 5,997.29 cases in Malaysia, compared to the 5,121.29 in the Philippines and Indonesia’s 5,067.14 cases, based on rolling seven-day averages, it said.
Daily new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia have exceeded Indonesia’s figures since May 15, it added.
“The Philippines has been experiencing a decreasing trend in average daily new Covid-19 infections since April 15, while Malaysia’s daily cases have been on the rise since April 1,” it said.
It also warned that Malaysia has been reporting the highest number of daily new Covid-19 cases per capita in Asean after overtaking the Philippines since April 26. On daily Covid-19 deaths, it said Malaysia’s daily new deaths per million population, based on a seven-day rolling average, have exceeded Indonesia since May 12 and the Philippines since May 16.
Yesterday, the Philippines and Indonesia recorded 0.99 and 0.65 new fatalities per million population, compared to Malaysia’s 1.53.
Malaysia has recorded 2,309 Covid-19 deaths so far, with a record 61 fatalities today. - FMT
