A students’ body has called on students who have yet to be given their appointments to immediately go to vaccination centres that offer walk-in jabs.PETALING JAYA: The higher education ministry’s decision to only allow fully vaccinated students to return to campuses should be extended to university staff too to ensure a truly safe environment, says a students’ body.
National Students Consultative Council (MPPK) president Amir Asyraf Sabri said lecturers who refuse to get vaccinated, or who are anti-vaxxers, should be restricted from teaching classes face-to-face.
“The responsibility of preserving the campus’ safety lies not only in the hands of students but is also the collective responsibility of all involved in higher education institutions,” he said in a statement today.
However, he said those who could not get vaccinated for medical reasons should be allowed to return to campus, but only if their presence is really needed.
Earlier today, higher education minister Noraini Ahmad was reported as saying that university students who were not fully vaccinated would not be allowed to enter the campus and must follow their lessons online.
“Only students who have received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine will be allowed to study on campus as part of hybrid learning,” she was quoted as saying by Mingguan Malaysia.
Amir said students who have yet to be given their appointments should immediately go to vaccination centres that offer walk-in jabs.
This is to ensure all the parties involved create a safe environment on campus when they return for hybrid lessons in October, he said.
He also agreed with the minister that students who refused to get vaccinated without solid reasons should not be allowed back on campus. - FMT
