Lynas Takes Parliamentary Caucus To Task For No Show At Plant

(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Lynas Malaysia has hit out at a parliamentary caucus to monitor the plant’s operations in Gebeng, Pahang, for failing to turn up for a briefing on its operations despite being invited to do so
The company’s managing director Mashal Ahmad said they invited all members of the parliamentary caucus – chaired by the DAP’s Wong Tack – to visit its plant
They also invited Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin
But to date, Mashal said, all except one member of the “caucus” have either declined or not responded to their hand-delivered invitations
“This is disappointing as many assertions made by the committee are incorrect and we wish to ensure that all members have access to the facts. This contrasts with the diligent, scientific approach of the Pakatan Harapan government’s Review Committee, appointed by the minister in 2018.”Mashal went on to say that the Review Committee visited the Lynas Malaysia facility and held meetings with management, scientific experts, community members and groups opposed to Lynas
Mashal Ahmad.Following this, he said, the Review Committee found Lynas Malaysia’s operations were of low risk and compliant with relevant regulations, and that the residue storage facilities were being operated in a proper manner
Recently, Yeo and Entrepreneurial Development Minister Redzuan Yusof were involved in a spat over Lynas, with the latter saying the government would allow the plant to continue operating
Yeo, meanwhile, said the government had formed a task force to facilitate the return of waste to Australia and that Lynas needed to ship out its waste as a pre-condition for the renewal of its licence
Yesterday Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the Cabinet had yet to discuss the disposal of waste by the rare earths miner but said that whatever was determined by the Cabinet would be the official decision. - FMT
