Lawyer Slams Cops For Failing To Retrieve Missing Child From Dubai
R Renuga says police have yet to issue an Interpol alert, nearly two years after Krisha Kannan went missing in the midst of a custody dispute.
V Thevitthra, mother of four-year-old Krisha Kannan, was awarded sole custody of the child by the Court of Appeal. (V Thevitthra pic)PETALING JAYA: The mother of a four-year-old girl reported missing nearly two years ago has questioned the lack of police action despite “clear evidence” that the child is living in Dubai with her father
Krisha Kannan, who was at the centre of a custody dispute, was taken in September 2023 during a court-ordered parental visit.
Her mother, V Thevitthra, obtained a High Court order to recover the child and the police had confirmed in August that the recovery order would be executed, said her lawyer, R Renuga Ramayah.
However, no action had been taken so far. “Police have not issued an Interpol notice despite the father’s final appeal being dismissed, and despite clear evidence showing the child is in Dubai,” she told FMT. “Without that notice, foreign authorities cannot act. This delay is prolonging a mother’s suffering.”
FMT has sought comment from the police.
Documents provided to FMT show that the girl holds a Dubai residency visa valid until December 2026, sponsored by her father Kannan Rajaratnam, 38, who also holds a Dubai residency visa as part of working with a company there.
Records also show that several members of his family, including his mother and sister, also hold UAE residency passes.
“This is not a case where the authorities say they do not know where the child is. The whole family network is there. The evidence is in black and white,” said Renuga.
She said the High Court had issued an order for police to detain family members believed to be assisting Kannan in keeping the child abroad. She alleged that “police have ignored the directive”.
“All this supports what the mother has been saying from the start: that Krisha was taken to Dubai and is being kept there with the help of relatives,” she said.
Krisha has not been seen by Thevitthra since Sept 2, 2023, when she was taken from a mall in Penang during a supervised parental visit.
The High Court in Shah Alam later granted the mother sole custody and ordered the father to return the child immediately. The Court of Appeal struck out his challenge for being filed late, and the Federal Court dismissed his final attempt to appeal. - FMT
