The proposed Kulim International Airport project also involves an airport city and a logistics hub. (Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: The Kedah government has the option of choosing another company to develop the proposed Kulim International Airport project should tycoon Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary’s company pull out, menteri besar Sanusi Nor said today.
Sanusi said the state government made an offer to two companies, including Syed Mokhtar’s company, for a joint venture to develop the project, Bernama reported.
The other company, which has cargo expertise, has already given feedback saying it is ready to collaborate, he said at a media conference after the Kedah state assembly meeting.
He said other companies which are capable of being involved in the RM7 billion project have sent development proposal papers to the state government.
Sanusi said the state government would also call KXP Airport City to give a briefing on the extent of dealings with Syed Mokhtar’s company concerning the project.
“If he (Syed Mokhtar) has to reject (the project), please do, I have no problems with it, perhaps he can be involved in other projects. If he rejects it, we will make a new assessment (of other companies),” he said.
Sanusi’s remarks came days after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told the Dewan Rakyat that ECK Group, the strategic partner chosen by the Kedah government, had cancelled their suggestion to spearhead the development of the airport.
He said he had received a letter from Sanusi asking the federal government to reconsider approving the project.
He also said Syed Mokhtar had called to apologise for not being able to help manage the project, according to the New Straits Times.
Anwar said the Kedah government could still present a new plan if they wanted to. - FMT
