Kedah Dap Wants State To Stop Temple Demolitions

Kedah DAP members at today’s state convention in Alor Setar.ALOR SETAR: Kedah DAP has urged the state government and the local councils to stop the clearing of non-Muslim places of worship, as part of 12 resolutions passed by the state chapter at its convention here today.
State DAP chief Tan Kok Yew said the resolution was passed because a third Hindu temple has been slated to be demolished, this time in Bandar Mutiara in Sungai Petani.
The PAS-led Kedah government is supporting enforcement action by local councils on illegally-built places of worship, saying it was to assure a “peaceful and harmonious future, based on the rule of law”. Two Hindu temples and a few Chinese shrines were cleared last year for being illegally built.
“I urge the Kedah government to be fair to the minority communities in the state. Yesterday, I received a call saying yet another Hindu temple would be demolished in Sungai Petani.
“I urge the state to stop all clearing works and hold talks with representatives of all faiths,” he said during the opening of the state convention at the Starcity Hotel here today.
Separately, Tan, who is also Derga assemblyman, also asked how the Kedah government claimed that it has raised a total investment of RM68 billion ever since PAS took over when official figures as of March 3 showed Selangor with the highest figure, at just RM38.7 billion.
Other resolutions passed include urging the Kedah government to ensure a clean and uninterrupted water supply; and urging the Pakatan Harapan central leadership to allocate candidates from each component party for all state and parliamentary seats in the coming general election.
Earlier, Tan also announced that all 15 who contested for the Kedah DAP committee had won uncontested.
Tan remains the state chairman with Siau Suen Miin as his deputy. Zulhazmi Shariff and Karunagaran Govindan were made vice-chairmen.
Teh Swee Leong, the Kota Darul Aman assemblyman, was appointed secretary, with Liew Eng Wah as his assistant. Tan and Teh are the only elected state reps from the DAP.
