Johor Sultan Why Won T Putrajaya Give Mega Solar Project A Chance
Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, who last week announced Southeast Asia's largest solar power park in Pengerang, said he did not see any reason why Putrajaya should not give the project a chance.
He said this after the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sultan Ibrahim Solar Park scheduled for March 23 was cancelled.
"The decision was made as the federal government has yet to give any response with regards to the proposed project," said an announcement on Sultan Ibrahim's Facebook page.
The announcement also carried the ruler's comments on Putrajaya's position on the project.
“I don’t see any reason why the federal government would not be willing to give Johor a chance to be an eco-friendly producer of electricity.
"We have a suitable plot for the project, robust growth and development, as well as a healthy demand from our neighbour, all of which make Johor a most strategic location," Sultan Ibrahim said.
The stakeholders and beneficiaries of the proposed project are unclear.
The project came under the spotlight after Sultan Ibrahim announced it last week.
It had been described as the first large-scale private investment secured by the state as a result of Sultan Ibrahim's efforts.
The RM1.4 billion solar project is supposed to have a 450MW capacity, the largest in Southeast Asia.
"The project is also in line with the 2030 Johor Sustainable Development Plan which places major emphasis on environmental preservation and protection as part of the state’s economic development plan for a more prosperous society.
"It will also have a positive economic spillover effect for the state with job creation at various levels as the solar park will be the region’s largest solar energy storage system when fully operational," said the ruler on the Facebook page. - Mkini
