The Selangor state government doing business in strange ways MURRAY HUNTER
Over the last couple of days, social media has been busy with comments about Selangor General Insurance Scheme (INSAN). Many net-citizens are complaining that they have been signed up for an insurance policy without their knowledge.
These net-citizens are also complaining that their personal information was taken from the SPR electoral registration, and used without their permission, thus invading their privacy.

The newly reappointed chief minister of Selangor Amirudin Shari said the process of using Election Commission (SPR) data was just to set up pre-registration for Selangor residents. This was promoted much differently last December.

The Communications and Media Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the Personal Data Protection Department of the Malaysian Communications and Multi-media Commission (MCMC) is looking into the matter. Fahmi also added that there is no issue of using EC data as it can be purchased anyway.
The INSAN incident has highlighted the complex web of corporate identities and people involved in setting up and running this insurance scheme. Rather than give the project to the Selangor State Economic Development Corporation, which already has a medical insurance company (Selcare), Amirudin and his state exco, or Meneri Besar Incorporated (MBI) directors purchased 49 percent of equity in a company called Wavpay Holding Sdn. Bhd. The other 50 percent is owned by a Penang based licensed money lender called CT Frank Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd., which was formally known as Tatt Kuan Enterprise Sdn. Bhd.
Wavpay Fintech Holding Sdn Bhd owns three other businesses, namely Wavpay Systems, Wavpay Credit, and Wavpay e-Commerce. The systems these companies operate for interest bearing loans is accessed by Selangor’s E-Wallet.
This effectively puts MBI into the Ahlong business with premium interest rates. Access to Wavpay systems from the Selangor E-Wallet could potentially greatly expand this interest-based credit business. Some Net-Citizens are concerned that when Selangor residents access the system and see any access icons offering credit, they will believe this is sanctioned by the Selangor government.
