Include M40 For Cash Aid Pkr Mp Tells Govt
Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil said the M40 was being treated like ‘stepchildren’ because they are not eligible for the Bantuan Keluarga Malaysia cash aid.PETALING JAYA: A PKR MP has criticised the government’s move to exclude the middle-income M40 group from receiving cash aid, saying they should not be sidelined.
Fahmi Fadzil said the M40 was being treated like “stepchildren” as households earning RM5,001 or more were not eligible for the Bantuan Keluarga Malaysia (BKM) cash aid.
The Lembah Pantai MP said the government should be studying a “digital food voucher” system extended to the “lower M40” group, using identification cards.
He said this was considering that more than 600,000 households from the M40 group had slipped to the B40 group.
Fahmi said assistance should be provided based on the size of a household and area of residence, as the cost of living had been spiralling.
“It’s illogical if households in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, receive the same amount of assistance – RM100 – as households in Marang, Terengganu. This is because the impact of inflation differs according to locality,” he said in a statement.
He said while economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed’s statement that inflation had reached 11.4% in May was not surprising, it was still a serious concern.
Last week, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced an increase of RM100 in the BKM cash aid, in view of the removal of certain subsidies and ceiling prices as well as the rising cost of goods. - FMT
