If The Rich Usually Get Scholarships Aren T We Subsidising The Rich Again

THE age old debate is revived again when someone brings up the sticky topic of whether scholarships should be given to the poor. In a country where the rich and Singaporeans enjoy subsidised petrol, perhaps this topic will remain relevant for a long time.
Recently, a lady became viral on the cyberspace for highlighting the fact that the poor usually do not qualify for a scholarship. In a video, she revealed that she has studied in the UK for four years.
According to her experience, the majority of the people who received scholarships were from the middle income family and above. She said these people usually argue that the scholarship was merit-based and that they deserved it since they worked hard for it.

But what about the poor who excels academically but lose out to these privileged people? She said this was the problem of the system although she made no elaboration on how to remedy the situation.
The hard hitting video has since garnered over 2,500 reposts and 102 comments on X. One of the commentators, @syAfiqkarim73 pointed out that it takes a minimum of RM500,000 to send one student over to the UK to complete his degree.
“Nowadays, these colonial countries see tertiary education as a way of extortion on these smaller developing nations,” he said.

Netizen @muhdrajaei was in agreement. He said education at a local university should suffice.

“Look at UiTM. There are so many graduates who are successful in their field of work. And the fees are cheap, made specifically to help the bumiputera B40.
“Then there are those who study overseas and no longer return to Malaysia to work,” warned @hidupkeras0.
On another note, brain drain is another serious problem, with digital minister Gobind Singh Deo highlighting that over 1.86 mil Malaysian have left the country over the past 50 years. It seems our education minister will have an uphill battle moving forward with all these issues to address. — Focus Malaysia
