DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng has responded to speculation that he may not be appointed a cabinet position in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's government.
The former finance minister stressed that the question of giving him a cabinet post is secondary to ensuring that the country’s future is not “stolen”.
Lim (above) said that he is willing to serve in any capacity in the new government.
“Let me state my willingness to serve in any capacity so long as it serves the larger national interest that the unity government led by Anwar can continue to function and remain stable against extremist forces seeking to undermine and topple it.
“Pakatan Harapan deserves to be in government after winning the most seats and largest popular vote in the 15th general election.
“Together with BN and parties from Sabah and Sarawak, this unity government has a clear-cut majority that represents the will of the rakyat representing not just a single group but every Malaysian in our diverse society,” he said in a statement today.
“This is a Malaysian unity government,” he added.
Court trials
Lim, who served in the previous Harapan cabinet, is facing ongoing court trials.
In recent days, the Bagan MP has faced questions on whether he, along with others such as Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, should be given positions in the cabinet despite their ongoing trials.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Tambun todayThe prime minister is expected to reveal some of his cabinet members today while visiting his Tambun constituency.
Anwar was widely believed to have been granted an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah on the appointment of the cabinet this morning.
Last night, Anwar told supporters that the cabinet list was "almost settled" and he will make an announcement within "two or three days".
Anwar, who leads a hodgepodge government of former rivals, is expected to face challenges in balancing between satisfying the demands of his new allies and coming up with a convincing cabinet. - Mkini
