Gerakan S Sole Rep Dared To Withdraw From Kedah Govt

A Kedah opposition lawmaker has challenged Gerakan’s sole representative in the state’s ruling coalition to withdraw support for Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
DAP’s Kota Darul Aman assemblyperson Teh Swee Leong said Kulim assemblyperson Wong Chia Zhen should take a stand following Sanusi’s remark that Gerakan is free to leave Perikatan Nasional.
“Don’t just quarrel and be heard on social media but at the same time remain at the same table in the Kedah government led by Sanusi.
“Gerakan must show bravery, not waste time and resources to retain the party’s one and only exco seat in Kedah, if they feel their values are no longer aligned with PAS or PN,” said Teh in a statement yesterday.
“If a component partner in PN has called them to leave, why should they remain in an uncomfortable position?” he added.
Wong (above, middle), who is also Gerakan’s sole elected representative at all levels, was appointed the Kedah state executive councillor in charge of human resources, Chinese, Indian, and Siamese affairs, and NGOs.
Kota Darul Aman assemblyperson Teh Swee LeongHe won the Kulim seat against Pakatan Harapan’s Teh Lean Ong in the Kedah state election last year, which also resulted in the opposition bench only having three representatives, two from PKR and one from DAP, out of 36 seats in the legislative assembly.
As a part of PN together with PAS and Bersatu, Gerakan lost all 23 Parliament seats it contested in the 2022 general election and 35 seats in the state election last August.
On Monday (July 29), Sanusi, who is also PN election director, echoed PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah’s view that Gerakan is free to leave if the party is no longer comfortable being a part of the coalition.
The two leaders were responding to Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong’s statement that the party would not hesitate to leave PN to defend the Chinese education system. - Mkini
