Festive And Feisty Some Use Raya Snaps To Make A Point Against Pn
Some have peppered their online Hari Raya Aidilfitri greetings with demands against the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.
Dressed in festive outfits, they posed with placards emblazoned with slogans like “Buka Parlimen” (open Parliament), “Tamat Darurat” (end emergency) and “Kerajaan Gagal” (failed government).
Several participants of the #BerayaDiJalanRaya (celebrate Raya on the streets) social media campaign also characterised their inability to return home to celebrate the festival with their family as proof of the government’s failure to handle the Covid-19 pandemic.
Selamat Hari Raya!
First time celebrating raya away from my family thanks to this incompetent government.

— A. Yelena (@aidarshd) May 13, 2021This marks the second continuous year that Hari Raya Aidilfitri has been celebrated during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Today’s online campaign was organised by Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat, a loose coalition made up of youth groups like Undi18 and members of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda).
The objective of the campaign was to pressure the PN on its six demands: to lift the emergency; reopen Parliament; immediately implement Undi18; ensure the rakyat’s economic independence; make education safe for all rakyat; ensure no double standards before the law; and to empower the rights of Sabah and Sarawak.
The coalition contends that the third movement control order (MCO 3.0) signalled that Putrajaya had failed to combat the pandemic. They also argued that it represented the inability of the emergency to address the crisis.
The group previously held the “Buka Puasa Buka Parlimen” demonstration in front of the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur to demand for Parliament sessions to be reconvened.
Parliament has been suspended since January when the emergency was declared. - Mkini
