Don T Try To Be Funny Umno Youth Warns Dap Rep Over Statelessness Event
Johor Umno Youth has cautioned Stulang assemblyperson Andrew Chen over a programme to address statelessness, which has courted backlash on social media.
“Don’t try to be funny… You’ll be surprised if you try to do something funny,” the wing’s chief Noor Azleen Ambrose told reporters in Johor this evening.
Although Chen announced that the programme scheduled for June 30 had been postponed, the Umno Youth leader demanded that it be scrapped.
It is believed the controversy erupted over the initial title of the programme, which read: “Program Permohonan Kewarganegaraan (Citizenship application programme).”
However, on Chen’s Facebook, the title appeared to have been changed to “Taklimat dan Penerangan Kewarganegaraan (Briefing and explanation on citizenship)”.
This, however, failed to pacify Azleen (above), who questioned the need for DAP to organise the programme.
The Youth chief said the matter should be handled by the National Registration Department and Home Ministry instead.
“There is no reason for a political party to engage in such activities. It should be done by the agencies.
“What more now the home minister is also one of them (Pakatan Harapan),” he added in reference to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Azlene said that while he had refrained from responding to alleged provocations on other issues including vernacular schools, there are matters such as rights to citizenship that cannot be compromised on.
Earlier, Chen clarified that programme was aimed at addressing the problems of those without citizenship and birth certificates due to the negligence of their parents and other factors. - Mkini
