Death For Treason Malaysians Demand Stiffer Punishment For Military Personnel Arrested For Graft

“LET them hang!”
That may seem a tad extreme but was reflective of public dismay at endemic corruption that has seeped into every facet of society, especially those entrusted with the safe-keeping of the nation’s borders.
Such was the reaction of netizens to news that senior military personnel had been busted for colluding with a smuggling syndicate.
BFM News (@NewsBFM) had shared on X a Bernama report outlining that 10 suspects, including five senior military personnel, had been arrested with the latter allegedly receiving up to RM3 mil in bribes.
The post has already amassed 291.2K views at time of writing, underlining that many Malaysians are just plain fed up at this deep-rooted problem that seems to affect every facet of public life.
This frustration is abundantly clear when a number of commenters are calling, nay demanding, for harsher penalties to deal with this issue.
Public executions ranging from hanging and beheading in front of family members were among some of the more extreme measures called for underlining the rakyat’s anger.

One commenter stressed that some meaningful action needs to be taken, not just the usual transfer to another government department or location.

Quite a few were interested to know just where firebrand UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh stood on this issue. Was he planning a demonstration, they wondered.

Echoing similar sentiments, one commenter gleefully quoted PAS supremo Tan Sri Hadi Awang who had previously blamed non-Malays as the source of corruption in the country.

The ‘fish rots from the head’ seems to be the insinuation from one commenter. Referencing disgraced former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak who is renowned with his Bossku moniker, corrupt practices seem to be very much the norm from the top down with no shame attached to it.

Also reacting to the same news report, VieN I C40 @AMG25 (@ComicsByVieN) made the pointed observation that corruption does not seem to be viewed in the same category as consuming pork or alcohol.
One commenter agreed that these were all haram and there should be no “whitewashing”.

The very fact that this involved military personnel entrusted with the nation’s security and safety disgusted one commenter who also made special mention of the aforementioned Akmal and asked what he is doing about this case.

Alas, a few commenters seem to miss the point the poster was making, ie the same level of attention is seemingly NOT given to the taking of bribes as compared to consuming porcine or alcohol.

It must be stressed that corruption has reached endemic levels in this country. There is just no two ways about it.
Perhaps it is time that corruption is viewed and mentioned in the same breath as other vices – or is it already too late? – Focus Malaysia
