(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin has hit out at Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission amid the anti-graft agency’s “purported” investigation against him and his family, which he described as a “witch-hunt”.
Last week, MACC chief Azam Baki revealed that the agency was investigating Daim for alleged corruption and money laundering following the seizure of a skyscraper, The Star reported.
Anwar said MACC’s probe that led to the seizure of the 60-storey Ilham Tower was proof that they would investigate anyone regardless of their background or position.
In a statement on AstroAwani today, Daim claimed that he had not been informed of the alleged offence he was accused of. He said there had been an “organised effort” to discredit him by releasing misinformation and “baseless insinuations”.
“I categorically deny any corrupt act or wrongdoing of whatsoever nature by myself or my family. This investigation is nothing short of a political witch-hunt against us,” he said.
“Until today, I have not been informed as to what offence I am alleged to have committed despite my repeated written queries to MACC.
“I can reveal that we received a letter signed by Azam himself declining point-blank to tell me what the offence is.”
Daim also said he found it “unacceptable and unprofessional” that Azam made prejudicial comments in public while the investigation was ongoing.
“Not being told of the offences against me, I am in no position to answer them or defend myself,” he said.
He also claimed that Anwar viewed him as a political threat and aimed to discredit him, citing how the latter said “this is an open secret, where a person has amassed extraordinary wealth” on Dec 22.
“This amply shows his animus against me,” he said.
He urged Anwar and Azam to respect the rule of law, due process, and act accordingly, emphasising the importance of upholding their oaths of office. - FMT
