Cops Summon Pkr Man Over Alleged Treating In Rantau Polls
Police have summoned PKR Youth communications chief Wong Chun Yuan to assist in an investigation that Pakatan Harapan allegedly breached election laws by treating voters in the Rantau by-election
When contacted, acting Negeri Sembilan police chief Mohamad Mat Yusop confirmed to Malaysiakini that the matter was being investigated under Section 8 of the Election Offences Act relating to the offence of treating
The move would be a welcome development to electoral reform activists who have long complained about police being reluctant to investigate election offences
Such cases have often seen the ball being kicked back and forth between the police and the Election Commission, which has limited powers in enforcement
Wong confirmed that he was summoned to appear at the Seremban district police headquarters tomorrow over a dinner held in Bandar Ekar on the eve of the by-election that concluded on Saturday
However, Wong said there was a misunderstanding and the dinner was a fundraising event and not to treat voters
"The Election Commission (EC) had lodged a report over the matter despite me having proven that the dinner was held by the virtue of selling tickets to Rantau people, and not a dinner treat (for voters)
"I will be at the police headquarters tomorrow with PKR Youth lawyer CM Chiew at 11am, and will hold a press conference outside after my statement is recorded," he said in a statement
When contacted later, Wong told Malaysiakini that the dinner was attended by some 1,000 people, including voters and party members
Each table of 10 pax was sold for RM300 or RM30 per person, according to him. - Mkini
