Board Of Architects Don T Let Crooks Hijack Our Blueprint
The Board of Architects Malaysia has taken issue with the media’s habit of calling corruption masterminds “architects”, emphasising that real architects design safe and sustainable spaces - not blueprints for crime.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page today, the board condemned the use of their professional title as shorthand for criminal schemers, saying it demeans a regulated vocation dedicated to public service.
“An architect is a licensed professional… who is dedicated to building safe, sustainable and meaningful spaces for the public, not a synonym for wrongdoing.
“Words matter: let us respect the dignity of the profession,” the board’s president, Azman Hashim, said.
In a second statement also uploaded today, Azman argued that the title “architect” is “legally protected” under the Architects Act 1967.
ADS‘Exercise care’
He said that such provisions ensure that the title may only be used by individuals who are registered with the board and licensed to practice architecture in Malaysia.
He stressed that while the term “architect” is sometimes used figuratively in political and journalistic commentary with no intention to imply professional practice, the word in such contexts should not be confused with the designation for qualified professionals in the built environment.
As such, he said the board respectfully urges media outlets and public figures to “exercise care” when using the term “architect” in non-professional contexts.
“Misuse may inadvertently diminish public understanding of the qualifications and responsibilities of registered architects,” he cautioned.
He added that the board remains committed to upholding the integrity of the architectural profession and promoting public awareness of its role in shaping Malaysia’s built environment. - Mkini
