Bersih Selangor Govt S Hari Raya Event In Kkb Violates Election Laws
The Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house planned by the Selangor state government in Kuala Kubu Baharu tomorrow evening is an election offence, said Bersih.
The electoral reform group questioned the location and timing of the event, given the nomination for the by-election in the state constituency is slated for tomorrow morning.
"Bersih would like to remind the Selangor state government that the organising of the Aidilfitri open house can be in violation of many provisions in the Election Offences Act 1954.
"Based on the programme brochure, the event will have feasting and the gifting of 'duit raya'. Feasting during an election is an offence under Section 8, and giving money to voters is an offence under Section 10 (of the Act)," the Bersih steering committee said in a statement today.
Bersih urged the Selangor state government to not use the event as a platform to introduce the government candidate for the by-election and campaign by installing flags and other campaign materials, since the open house is organised using state funds.
"The use of government resources, be it the state or federal, during the by-election period, must comply with the 3C principles previously outlined by Bersih, which are no conditions, no campaign and no candidate.
"Bersih would also like to remind political parties and candidates who would like to contest in the by-election to refrain from organising open house events, be it in the party or personal capacity, as it is against the Election Offences Act," said the group.
The by-election, scheduled for May 11, was called following the death of Lee Kee Hiong (DAP), who held the seat since 2013.
