Bazaar Organiser Files Report Over Pricey Food Claim

A social media influencer had posted a video claiming that burgers and Roti John were sold at high prices in a Johor Bahru bazaar.PETALING JAYA: The organiser of the Ramadan bazaar in Taman Suria, Johor Bahru, has filed a report against a social media influencer who posted a video on TikTok claiming that the food sold there is too expensive.
A spokesperson for the organiser said that the influencer’s irresponsible action had affected the bazaar traders’ business, reported Sinar Harian.
“We found out about the video on March 25. The influencer claimed that the burger (sold at the bazaar) cost RM30, Roti John RM40, and an additional 50 sen is charged for plastic bags,” said the spokesperson.
The organiser of the bazaar claimed that the influencer’s action had tarnished traders’ reputation, caused backlash from netizens, and sparked anger among the vendors.
“We were informed that an inspection by the government found no evidence of inflated prices. However, the influencer’s video is still making its rounds. Our intention in filing a police report is to counter the misinformation spread by the influencer,” the spokesperson said after filing the report at the Larkin police station.
A government official was quoted by Bernama today as saying that no stalls at the Ramadan bazaar were found to be selling burgers or Roti John at prices between RM30 and RM40 as claimed on social media.
An inspection at the bazaar two days ago showed that an average burger was sold at around RM6 to RM10 and Roti John between RM6 and RM15, said Lilis Saslinda Pornomo, Johor director of the ministry of domestic trade and cost of living.
“The inspection also found that there was no charge for plastic bags imposed at this Ramadan bazaar, as was reported,” she said. - FMT
