Azmin Unfazed Says Zahid S Views Are His Own
Bersatu supreme council member Azmin Ali is unfazed by claims that some Umno MPs are backing PKR president Anwar Ibrahim's bid for the premiership.
Yesterday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said "many" Umno and BN MPs told him that they are supporting Anwar and that he respected their position.
Speaking to reporters in Tawau, Sabah today, Azmin said Zahid's views were his own and contradicted those made by other BN leaders.
"That was his personal view. We can see that there are statements from BN leaders who said that Umno was with Perikatan Nasional (PN).
"(They support PN) because it is a government which has proven that it can implement internationally recognised initiatives in a short period of time.
"I believe everyone can see this, except one or two characters who are power crazy," he said.
Anwar had claimed yesterday that he had secured a "solid and convincing" majority and that the government led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had collapsed.
This was reinforced by Zahid's official statement, which followed Anwar's. Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and PAS have clarified that they were not backing Anwar.
As of the last sitting of the Dewan Rakyat in August, Muhyiddin had, at most, the support of 113 MPs. It would take only three defections for him to lose majority support.
When asked to comment on Anwar's claim, Azmin said this was not the first time the former had been saying so.
"Don't ask me. I don't know from where he got (those MPs). Perhaps he picked them up from the street. I don't know. Thank you," he said before leaving. - Mkini
