(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Twenty-eight companies operating heavy vehicles have paid the road transport department (JPJ) RM6.2 million in settling 34,371 outstanding traffic summonses
JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said the summonses were settled within the two-week period imposed on the companies, which operate lorries and express buses, Berita Harian reported.
He thanked the firms for complying with the deadline, saying they had reached out to JPJ to settle the summonses after they were called out by transport minister Loke Siew Fook.
However, Aedly said there were other companies with unpaid summonses, and JPJ had given them a month to settle them.
“If the summonses aren’t settled by then, JPJ will blacklist the vehicles registered under the companies,” he said.
He said the special compound rate of RM150 for summonses issued by the automated awareness safety system (AWAS) also applied to these companies. This special rate has been extended to Dec 31.
Last month, Loke said 11 companies had more than 1,000 outstanding traffic summonses, while 17 express bus firms had more than 200.
He said KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd, a company wholly owned by the Selangor government, had racked up 22,017 unpaid summonses on its own.
These summonses involved various serious road safety offences, including overloading, exceeding the speed limit, and failing to possess a valid driver’s licence and vehicle road tax. - FMT
